Dear Friends;
This weekend
we bid farewell to summer and salute the dignity of work. Those of
us who have a job often can take it for granted, yet this year many
in our families and country are out of work. Work, the past has been
given a bad name. Yet our church has taught for many years that work
or a vocation are items of the spirit and sacred things. (It was the
church that in the 1890's wrote a pastoral letter on the dignity of
work and advocated the forming of unions to defend workers. A
radical position at the time.
Those who work without a paycheck also provide a very
important service to our church and community. I am impressed at the
many who take a part in keeping the parish of St. Paul such an alive
parish. There are many in the community who volunteer in the various
ministries of the town and village. I am impressed at so many who
see a need and pitch in. This is truly work of the spirit.
Not to equate prayer as work, there are some who make
their vocation to pray. Prayer is a great need in our community and
world. Over a year ago we began the on-line prayer chain and I am
heartened when someone tells me, “Father those prayers made a
difference.”
Today we give thanks to God for the gift and dignity of
work he places before each and everyone of us.
Speaking of prayer, on Tuesday Riley Gross will undergo
the first of two surgeries to correct a curvature in her spine. The
first surgery will be Tuesday September 7th and a week later on
September14th she will undergo the second. I am sure Riley and her
family will appreciate any prayers and cards you may send her way.

ARE WE READY FOR THIS PRAYER? Yes, I will lift up my heart.
And I will give God thanks and praise. I’ll stay awake. I’ll listen
to every word. I’ll sing every acclamation and Amen. Thus I will put
energy into praying the Eucharistic prayer at Mass on Sunday. I’ll
bring to it every bit of life. I’ll remember everything, especially
the hard stuff (after all, at the center of this prayer is a body to
be broken for us, a covenant made in the blood of Christ).
I will be so attentive that when we’ve finished the
Eucharistic prayer with a room shaking Amen, I’ll know just how
right and good it is to pray the Our Father together, greet one
another with Christ’s peace, then enter a procession (not a line up,
a procession) that is singing its way to the table of the Lord.
And I’ll come hungry. By some kind of fasting—from
food, from entertainment, from distractions, from anger—I’ll come on
Sunday knowing in body and soul how hungry I am to hear God’s word
and hungry to give God thanks and praise and hungry to feast on the
body of Christ given for us, blood of Christ poured out for us.
And I’ll never again think that I can do any of this
alone. How could I? It is not I who give God thanks and praise, it
is the body of Christ that makes this Eucharistic praying. All the
baptized people in this room put their lives into this prayer that
the ordained priest proclaims. And it goes beyond the room. That’s
why we remember the church all over the world in our prayers for the
bishop and the pope, the living and dead. Am I ready for this
prayer? Are we?

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION is next
weekend – September 11 & 12 in the hall after the Masses.

ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS of Religious Education Students
in grades 7-12 and/or any religious education teachers:
At the time of religious education sign-up's (Sept. 11th and 12th),
please add your name and a phone number where you can be reached at
if you are interested in planning and volunteering some of your time
for a 'Lock-In', to be held at the Fr. Rausch Hall. We are
considering holding one for our youth and are looking for ideas,
suggestions, and volunteers!! After sign-ups, I will make phone
calls and coordinate a time and date for our first meeting (There,
you will find out what a 'lock-in' is, if you've never heard of
one--like me!). A Lock-In could be a fun way to motivate and excite
our youth, while giving them some 'ownership' within the Church, and
an opportunity to demonstrate their leadership abilities. Thanks in
advance for your support of this endeavor. Blessings, Danielle Gross
